1. What did Ripple and Robinhood announce about RLUSD?
Ripple announced on Tuesday, October 27, that Robinhood will bring Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD, into institutional settlement on the XRP Ledger and will move its corporate treasury operations onto Ripple's software. RLUSD is already live on Robinhood Chain and on Bitstamp by Robinhood, according to Ripple, which expects the token to reach users of the main Robinhood app later in 2026.
The announcement bundles three separate pieces of work: where RLUSD can be held and traded, how it will move between institutions, and how Robinhood itself will manage its own cash. Each piece points to a different use for the same token, and together they show how Ripple is trying to place RLUSD inside a large, publicly listed brokerage rather than leaving it as a product that lives only on crypto-native venues.
Several important details were left open. The company has not given a launch date for RLUSD in the Robinhood app, and it has not said which countries' customers would be able to use it. Those two gaps determine how large the retail audience could eventually be, and neither was addressed in the announcement.
2. Where RLUSD is already available
RLUSD is currently supported in two Robinhood-related places. The first is Robinhood Chain, the blockchain network associated with the brokerage. The second is Bitstamp by Robinhood, the global digital asset exchange that Robinhood finished acquiring in June 2025. Having the token on both gives Robinhood a live footprint for the stablecoin even before it appears in the flagship app that most of its customers use.
Ripple said it expects the stablecoin to arrive in that main app later this year. The company did not attach a date to the plan, so the timing should be read as an expectation rather than a commitment. For a brokerage that reported 28.7 million funded customers in its third-quarter 2026 results, published on Tuesday, even a limited rollout would put the token in front of an audience far larger than the one that trades on a specialist exchange.
The distinction between an exchange listing and an in-app feature matters. A listing on an exchange such as Bitstamp serves people who have already decided to trade digital assets. Access inside a mainstream app can expose a stablecoin to customers who may simply want to hold dollars or move funds, which is the use case issuers have long cited when arguing that stablecoins can become everyday payment tools.
The absence of a country list deserves attention. Stablecoin availability is shaped by local licensing rules, and a brokerage that serves customers across multiple jurisdictions typically introduces a product market by market. Until Robinhood identifies where the token will be offered, it is not possible to say how many of its funded customers could actually hold RLUSD in the app.
3. How will institutions settle in RLUSD on the XRP Ledger?
RLUSD will be offered for institutional settlement to Robinhood and to Bitstamp on the XRP Ledger, the public blockchain that Ripple has long been associated with. Settlement is the stage at which a trade is finalized and the funds and assets actually change hands. Using a dollar-denominated token for that step lets participants move value on a ledger around the clock instead of relying on bank cut-off times.
Ripple linked the move to Bitstamp's growth among institutional clients. Institutions generally need stable-value instruments to move balances between counterparties, post collateral and close out trades, and a stablecoin that settles on a public ledger can serve those needs without the delays of traditional correspondent banking.
The only comment from Robinhood in Ripple's release came from Johann Kerbrat, senior vice president and general manager of Robinhood Crypto and International. He said that utility is what moves stablecoins forward, a short statement that frames the arrangement as a test of practical demand rather than a bet on the token's branding.
Settlement in a stablecoin differs from settlement in a bank deposit in one practical respect: the transfer is recorded on a shared ledger and can be completed within moments, at any hour, rather than waiting for a banking day to open. Institutions that operate across time zones have cited that continuous availability as a main attraction, although they must also weigh the operational and compliance requirements of holding digital assets.
4. Robinhood's treasury moves to Ripple software
Beyond settlement, Ripple said Robinhood will adopt Ripple Treasury across its global operations. The software covers payments, intercompany netting, cash-flow forecasting, risk management, and the handling of cash and liquidity. Intercompany netting refers to offsetting the amounts that different arms of the same corporate group owe one another, so that only the net difference needs to be paid.
For a company with operations in several countries, those functions can involve many bank accounts and currencies. Placing them on a single platform is intended to give the finance team a clearer view of its cash position. The announcement did not describe how much of Robinhood's treasury activity would run through the software or on what timetable, and it did not say whether RLUSD would be used inside those treasury flows.
The treasury agreement is distinct from the stablecoin work, and it matters in its own right. It shows Robinhood as a customer of Ripple's corporate finance products, not only a venue where Ripple's token trades, which broadens the relationship between the two companies.
Treasury teams at large companies spend considerable effort on forecasting how much cash they will have in each currency and where. Software that unifies those views and automates netting can reduce the number of separate payments a group needs to make. Ripple's decision to publicize Robinhood as a treasury customer signals that it sees this corporate software line as a second pillar of its business alongside the token.
5. What is Ripple Prime and how does it connect to Bitstamp?
Ripple Prime is the prime brokerage business that Ripple operates after renaming Hidden Road, the firm it bought and closed the purchase of in October 2025. A prime broker provides trading, financing and clearing services to professional investors such as hedge funds and other institutions.
Under the arrangement described in the announcement, Ripple Prime offers lending and margin financing through Bitstamp on about 20 digital assets. Its clients can also trade spot markets on Bitstamp. Ripple said support for perpetual futures, a type of derivative contract with no fixed expiry date, will be added later in 2026.
This link explains why Bitstamp is central to the announcement. The exchange sits where Robinhood's international crypto business meets Ripple's institutional brokerage, and adding RLUSD settlement there gives professional clients a dollar token that can be used alongside the financing and trading services already on offer.
6. Ripple's view of institutional demand
Monica Long, Ripple's president, said the partnership reflects growing institutional demand for integrated solutions that serve both customer-facing products and core financial operations. In her framing, the same relationship covers the consumer side, where users hold and move a stablecoin, and the back-office side, where a company manages its payments and liquidity.
That framing is consistent with how stablecoin issuers have been presenting their products. Rather than competing only on trading volume, they are emphasizing use inside real financial workflows, from settlement to treasury management, where a token with a stable price can reduce friction. Whether institutions adopt such tools at scale will depend on practical factors including regulation, custody arrangements and the willingness of banks and brokerages to change established processes.
The statement also hints at why the two sides are pairing products. A brokerage that holds customer assets, trades on its own account and operates in several markets has needs on both fronts, and a vendor that can supply both a settlement token and cash-management tools can present itself as a single partner rather than two.
7. How large is RLUSD today?
RLUSD launched in December 2024. Data from CoinGecko showed a market capitalization of roughly $2.62 billion on Wednesday, October 28. Market capitalization for a stablecoin reflects the number of tokens in circulation, and since each token is intended to be worth one dollar, the figure approximates the amount of dollars the token represents.
That size places RLUSD well behind the largest dollar stablecoins, but it has grown steadily in less than two years, and the Robinhood arrangement adds a distribution channel with a very large customer base. The figure comes from a single day of market data and can change quickly.
8. Recent regulatory and banking milestones
The Robinhood announcement follows several other developments for RLUSD. Ripple received final federal approval for a national trust bank that will manage the token's reserves. Moody's assigned RLUSD an A2 deposit rating. BNY began holding XRP in custody for institutional clients and, together with Ripple, plans to let customers mint and redeem RLUSD within the bank, subject to final approvals and with no timeline given.
Taken together, these steps address concerns that institutional users commonly raise about stablecoins: who holds the reserves, how they are supervised, and how clients can convert between the token and dollars. A trust bank charter, an external credit assessment and a major custodian's involvement each speak to one of those concerns.
Each of these developments is independent of the Robinhood arrangement, yet they reinforce it. A brokerage evaluating a stablecoin for institutional settlement will want assurance about reserve management and supervision, and the trust bank approval and the credit rating supply some of that evidence.
9. What to watch next
The clearest milestone is the arrival of RLUSD in the main Robinhood app, which Ripple expects before the end of 2026. Observers will be looking for a firm launch date and for the list of countries where customers can use it, since the announcement did not supply either.
Other open items include the timetable for BNY's planned minting and redemption service, which still depends on final approvals, and the rollout of perpetual futures support through Ripple Prime and Bitstamp later this year. Progress on these would show whether the partnership is translating into measurable usage of the token.
