1. MSTR golden cross could arrive as soon as Monday

Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly listed holder of bitcoin, is close to a golden cross on its stock chart, a technical signal that could print as early as Monday, October 19. The pattern follows bitcoin's own golden cross, confirmed on September 8, and comes as Strategy's holdings are valued at $69.81 billion.

The timing matters to traders because the two charts are now lining up. Bitcoin (BTC) flashed the bullish formation only weeks ago, and the company that has built its balance sheet around the asset is about to show the same pattern in its share price. Whether the stock follows the coin's lead is the open question that market participants are weighing at the start of the week.

Strategy began buying bitcoin for its corporate balance sheet in August 2020, a decision that turned a business-software company into a widely watched proxy for the digital asset. Because the stock's behavior is so tied to the price of bitcoin, technical signals on the shares are often read alongside those on the coin itself. That is why a golden cross on MSTR draws attention well beyond the equity market.

The signal has not yet been confirmed. The 50-day average of the stock's price appears set to cross above its 200-day average following a breakout above a trendline on the daily chart, but until the crossover actually registers, it remains a possibility rather than a fact. A chart of the stock's daily prices since February 2025, with the two averages overlaid, shows the shorter line approaching the longer one from below.

2. What is a golden cross?

A golden cross occurs when a security's 50-day moving average rises above its 200-day moving average. The 50-day line tracks the average closing price over roughly the last ten weeks of trading, while the 200-day line smooths out about forty weeks. When the faster line climbs through the slower one, it indicates that recent prices have been stronger than the longer-term trend.

Some traders treat the crossover as a decisive shift in momentum, one that can mark the start of a prolonged rally. The logic is straightforward: if the average of the last 50 sessions is higher than the average of the last 200, buyers have been gaining the upper hand for some time. Followers of the pattern often view it as a confirmation that a recovery is more than a short-lived bounce.

The opposite formation is known as a death cross, which appears when the 50-day average falls below the 200-day average. Traders regard it as the bearish counterpart, a sign that momentum has turned lower. Strategy's stock has experienced both formations in recent years, and the history of those signals is central to understanding what the coming crossover may or may not mean.

Because moving averages are calculated from past prices, a golden cross is a lagging indicator. By the time it appears, the stock has usually already moved off its lows. Supporters argue that this delay is a feature, since it filters out noise and waits for a trend to establish itself. Critics counter that it can arrive late, after much of a rally has already taken place, and that it offers no guarantee about what happens next.

3. How did earlier Strategy golden crosses play out?

MSTR has had two previous golden crosses since the company started accumulating bitcoin, and both were followed by large rallies. The history is the main reason the pattern is being discussed so closely this week.

The first came on September 15, 2020, with the stock trading near $15.57. By February 2021 the shares had reached $127.29, a gain of 717% from the signal day. A death cross followed in January 2022, when the stock stood at $46.83. Even at that bearish moment, the price was still roughly triple its level on the day of the golden cross.

The second golden cross arrived on March 2, 2023, with the stock at $25.29. The shares peaked at $473.83 in November 2024, which represents a rise of 1,774% from the signal. A death cross appeared in October 2025, when the price was $328.40. That level was still 1,199% above the price recorded on the day the golden cross printed.

Taken together, the two episodes show the pattern working in the most favorable way for those who followed it: a bullish signal, a multiple-fold advance, and a bearish crossover that came only after most of the gain had been realized. Both cycles also coincided with strong periods for bitcoin, which underscores how closely the equity and the underlying asset have moved.

4. How reliable is the golden cross signal for MSTR?

The signal is not especially reliable when measured across the stock's whole history. Since 1999, MSTR has produced 19 golden crosses. According to an analysis of that record, the stock was higher three months later after 11 of them, and higher twelve months later after only 10.

That works out to a hit rate of 50%, essentially the odds of a coin flip. The median twelve-month return after a golden cross was 3.3%, a modest figure that is far smaller than the gains seen after the 2020 and 2023 signals. The averages are being pulled up by a small number of exceptional episodes rather than by consistent performance.

The downside cases are also instructive. The two worst golden crosses, in 2001 and 2007, were followed by a 61% loss. Those episodes came long before the company adopted its bitcoin strategy, when it traded primarily as a software business, but they show that the pattern has at times preceded sharp declines rather than rallies.

The contrast between the long record and the recent one is the essential caveat. The two bitcoin-era crosses were both strongly positive, yet the 19-signal sample shows that outcomes vary widely and that the formation by itself does not predict direction. Readers should treat the golden cross as one input among many, and not as a forecast, particularly for a stock whose price depends heavily on a volatile asset.

5. How does bitcoin's own golden cross compare?

Bitcoin confirmed its golden cross on September 8. Since then the price has risen nearly 5% and is trading around $82,000, extending a rally that began from July lows below $60,000. Earlier in October, bitcoin reached a high above $87,000 before pulling back.

The sequence is notable because the coin has so far held the gains that followed its signal. A move from below $60,000 in July to the low $80,000s represents a substantial recovery, and the golden cross on September 8 came partway through that climb. Bitcoin's pattern therefore reflects a market that had already turned higher before the averages caught up.

MSTR now appears to be following the same path, with its averages converging after a period of improvement in the shares. The company's stock tends to amplify the swings of the coin, so a continued advance in bitcoin would help the equity sustain its signal, while a reversal could quickly pull the shorter average back below the longer one.

That sensitivity is a reminder that the two charts are linked. A golden cross on MSTR does not occur in isolation; it reflects the same market forces that moved bitcoin from its July lows. Investors comparing the two should keep in mind that the equity carries additional factors, including the value of the company's holdings, which stand at $69.81 billion.

6. Why do traders watch moving averages on a bitcoin proxy?

Moving averages are among the oldest and most widely used tools in technical analysis, and the 50-day and 200-day pair is the most closely followed combination. Because so many market participants watch the same two lines, a crossover can become partly self-reinforcing: traders who follow the signal may buy as it appears, which can add to the momentum the pattern is meant to describe.

For a company like Strategy, the relationship with bitcoin adds another layer. The stock is frequently used by investors who want exposure to the digital asset through a conventional brokerage account, so flows into and out of the shares often reflect sentiment toward bitcoin as much as views on the business itself. A bullish chart signal on the stock can therefore reinforce the broader narrative around the asset, and the reverse is also true.

None of this changes the basic limitation of the indicator. A crossover describes what prices have already done, not what they will do, and a sudden reversal in bitcoin or in equity markets can erase the pattern within days. Analysts who rely on it generally pair it with other measures, such as trading volume, support and resistance levels, and the direction of the underlying asset.

7. What to watch next

The immediate focus is whether the crossover registers on Monday, October 19, or in the sessions that follow. Traders will be checking the daily chart to see if the 50-day average actually closes above the 200-day average, and whether the stock holds above its recent trendline breakout.

Beyond the technical confirmation, attention will turn to whether MSTR follows bitcoin's path after its own signal. Bitcoin has gained nearly 5% since its golden cross on September 8, and the coin remains below its early-October high above $87,000. A renewed push higher in the digital asset would likely give the equity a supportive backdrop, while a slide would test the signal.

As the history shows, outcomes after a golden cross can range from multi-fold advances to steep losses. The stock's two bitcoin-era crosses were followed by rallies of 717% and 1,774%, but the overall record since 1999 is a 50% hit rate with a median twelve-month return of 3.3%. For now, it remains to be seen whether the pattern repeats.
