1. BlackRock tokenization moves from cash funds to portfolios

BlackRock tokenization efforts widened over the past two months, moving from cash-management funds in August to tokenized investment portfolios in late September. On August 3, 2026, the asset manager introduced two tokenized money market products for institutional cash and stablecoin reserves, and on September 24 Ondo Finance launched on-chain portfolios built on model strategies that BlackRock developed.

Taken together, the launches show a large traditional manager treating blockchain rails as a distribution channel for several kinds of products at once. The earliest steps involved short-term government debt and cash. The latest involve baskets of exchange-traded funds packaged as a single digital token.

None of these products is aimed at the typical retail crypto trader. Most are restricted to approved or professional investors, and each sits inside the securities rules that already govern the underlying funds. That framing matters, because it separates this activity from the permissionless token launches that defined earlier crypto cycles.

The sequence also shows how tokenization tends to spread inside a large institution. It starts with the simplest, most standardized instruments, where legal structures are well understood and settlement is the main friction. Once that works, the same plumbing can be reused for more complex products, and outside partners can build on top of it. That is the pattern visible across BlackRock's August and September announcements, and it is why a cash fund and an investment portfolio can be discussed as part of one strategy.

2. What did BlackRock launch in August?

BlackRock launched two products on August 3, 2026: BSTBL and BRSRV. BSTBL is a tokenized share class of an existing Treasury-focused liquidity fund, while BRSRV is a new money market vehicle built for holders of stablecoin reserves.

BSTBL, formally the OnChain Shares of the BlackRock Select Treasury Based Liquidity Fund, runs on Ethereum. BNY Mellon serves as its transfer agent and tokenization provider. Approved investors can move the shares between approved blockchain wallets, subject to securities laws and investor-eligibility requirements. The structure adds blockchain portability to a regulated fund interest without turning the shares into unrestricted, permissionless tokens.

BRSRV, the BlackRock Daily Reinvestment Stablecoin Reserve Vehicle, is aimed at digitally native institutional investors. It reinvests dividends daily and is available across more than one blockchain. Securitize acts as its transfer agent and tokenization provider. Both funds invest mainly in cash, short-term U.S. Treasuries and overnight repurchase agreements backed by Treasuries, and both are designed to qualify as reserve assets for permitted U.S. payment stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act.

3. How do stablecoin reserve funds work?

A stablecoin reserve fund holds the safe assets that back a dollar-pegged token. Issuers of such coins promise that each unit can be redeemed for one dollar, so the reserves must be liquid, low-risk and easy to value. Cash, short-term Treasuries and repurchase agreements secured by Treasuries fit that description, which is why money market funds are a natural home for them.

The GENIUS Act, the U.S. federal framework for payment stablecoins, sets out which assets issuers may hold behind their coins. By designing BRSRV to qualify as a permitted reserve asset, BlackRock is positioning the fund for issuers who want a regulated, yield-bearing place to park backing assets rather than leaving them in plain bank deposits.

Daily dividend reinvestment is a practical detail for that audience. Issuers manage reserves continuously, and a vehicle that compounds income each day and can interact with blockchain-based systems fits more easily into how digital-asset firms already operate.

4. Why did BlackRock extend tokenization to Europe?

In the same month, BlackRock also brought tokenized share classes of European money market funds to market, using JPMorgan's Kinexys platform on Ethereum. The shares are aimed at professional and qualified investors rather than the general public.

The tokens do not replace the traditional record of ownership. The transfer-agent register continues to serve as the official record of who owns the funds, while the on-chain token provides a second, more mobile representation of the same holding. BlackRock has said the tokenized versions keep the same capital preservation, liquidity and risk management standards as the existing share classes.

Reports around the launch cited a large combined figure for the funds involved. That number describes the wider fund range and should not be read as the amount of assets that has actually been tokenized, so it is best treated as context rather than as a measure of adoption.

5. What did Ondo Finance launch on September 24?

On September 24, 2026, Ondo Finance launched tokenized portfolios based on model strategies developed by BlackRock. The strategies cover high-income, diversified growth and high-growth approaches, and each portfolio holds a basket of exchange-traded funds that investors can hold as a digital token.

The arrangement is notable because it is the first time an outside firm has tokenized BlackRock's model portfolios. Until now, BlackRock's on-chain activity had mostly come through products it issued itself or through named infrastructure partners. Here, a crypto-native platform is the one packaging and distributing the strategies.

The precise division of responsibilities deserves care. Ondo issues and operates the tokens, while BlackRock supplies the model strategies, so the products should be read as Ondo offerings built on BlackRock's investment work rather than as funds BlackRock itself runs on-chain.

6. Why put funds on a blockchain?

Supporters of tokenization point to three advantages. Tokenized funds can settle faster than conventional ones, they can move between approved holders at any hour without waiting for banking hours, and every transfer leaves a visible record that adds transparency.

Those features are most valuable where money is already moving quickly. Stablecoin issuers, crypto exchanges and trading firms operate around the clock, and they often need to shift collateral or reserves on weekends. A fund share that can be transferred on a blockchain is easier to use in that setting than one that depends on a traditional settlement cycle.

BlackRock maintains that all of this operates within existing regulatory requirements. The transfer restrictions, eligibility checks and registers described above are how that commitment is put into practice, and they explain why these tokens behave differently from freely tradable cryptocurrencies.

7. What is a model portfolio, and why tokenize one?

A model portfolio is a predefined allocation across several investments, designed to match a particular goal such as steady income or long-term growth. Rather than choosing individual funds, an investor holds the whole mix, and the manager adjusts the weights over time to keep the portfolio close to its target.

Packaging such a mix as a single token changes how it can be held and moved. The holder owns one asset that represents the basket, and the composition and rebalancing can be organized through software rather than through a series of separate trades at a brokerage. Whether that is cheaper or simpler in practice depends on the fees, the liquidity of the underlying funds and the rules of the platform issuing the token.

The three strategy labels used for the Ondo portfolios, high income, diversified growth and high growth, mirror the risk tiers common in conventional advisory products. That familiarity is deliberate: it lets an investor judge the offering by well-known criteria instead of learning a new crypto-specific vocabulary.

8. What do transfer agents and tokenization providers do?

A transfer agent keeps the official register of who owns the shares of a fund and processes issuance, redemption and transfers. In a tokenized fund, that role does not disappear. It is carried out by a named institution that also operates the link between the legal register and the blockchain token.

The choice of institutions in these launches is telling. BNY Mellon, a long-established custodian and transfer agent, handles BSTBL, while Securitize, a company that specializes in tokenized securities, handles BRSRV. JPMorgan, through its Kinexys platform, supports the European share classes. Different funds, aimed at different clients, rely on different infrastructure.

For investors, the practical consequence is that the safeguards of a regulated fund remain in place. Eligibility checks, wallet approvals and the official register are managed by regulated firms, and a token that is moved outside the approved set of wallets would not simply be treated as a valid transfer.

9. How BUIDL laid the groundwork

BlackRock's tokenization work did not begin this summer. Its BUIDL fund, a tokenized Treasury product launched in 2024, was the manager's first prominent public-blockchain fund and demonstrated that institutional investors would hold tokenized government debt.

The newer products build on that experience in different directions. BSTBL and BRSRV target cash management and stablecoin reserves, the European share classes widen the geographic reach, and the Ondo portfolios move from cash-like instruments toward diversified investing.

Spreading products across several networks, with different providers on different funds, also reduces dependence on any one blockchain or vendor. BlackRock is not wagering on a single winner; it is placing the same regulated fund structures wherever institutional demand appears.

10. What happens next

The next indicators are practical rather than dramatic. Investors and competitors will watch how much money flows into BSTBL and BRSRV, whether stablecoin issuers adopt them as reserve holdings, and whether the Ondo portfolios attract steady demand from eligible buyers.

Rival asset managers have been launching comparable stablecoin-reserve funds, so the contest is increasingly about distribution and trust rather than novelty. A manager of BlackRock's size entering each niche raises the bar for smaller firms.

No specific date has been set for further announcements. If the pattern of the past two months continues, the likelier path is incremental: more share classes, more partners and more chains, each introduced inside the existing rulebook rather than outside it.

For crypto markets, the most direct effect would come through stablecoins. If reserve funds from the world's largest asset manager become a common choice for issuers, a meaningful share of the assets behind dollar tokens would sit in regulated, transparent, on-chain vehicles, tying the two industries more closely together.
